Sofifran shines a light on talent in the Francophone community

On November 2, 2025, Welland City Hall hosted the screening of “2 Rives et Dérives”, an original Sofifran production directed by Saïd Ben as part of the Canal S project, during National Francophone Immigration Week.

Through a story that is funny, moving and true to life, the sitcom sheds light on what settling in really involves and on the challenges newcomers face in Canada.

The evening had a warm, friendly feel, with doughnuts and popcorn offered by La Table de Calixte, for a real night at the movies.

The audience also discovered excerpts from three documentaries produced by Canal S: ’‘La Garderie du Royaume des Petits Papillons’’, ’‘Young and Gifted’’ and ’‘Le Beignet dans tous ses états’’.

These works reflect Sofifran’s determination to document Francophone diversity and to give the community a voice.

Participants shared their pride and their gratitude:

Maman Fété invited everyone to “wipe the slate clean” in order to build a better future, while Saïd Ben described Alphonsine Aka as “a revelation with a tragic soul”.

David praised the stunning acting. Nikki, Fatoumata, Vanessa and Josette spoke of the joy of rediscovering their own creativity. Éric Ndata summed up the general feeling:

“This kind of work matters a great deal, because it builds people up. It shows you what to expect when life gets hard as a newcomer. I hope the rest of the sitcom goes even further.”

Canal S: passion and challenges

Beyond the screening, the conversation turned to the very real challenges facing the Canal S project: funding, media visibility and recognition for Francophone creators.

Saïd Ben pointed out that “traditional channels are losing ground” and that the future will depend on bringing Canal S into new distribution networks.

These discussions confirmed the need for lasting support for Francophone cultural production, built on closeness, listening and training for new talent.

With “2 Rives et Dérives” and its documentary projects, Sofifran shows once again that it can bring people together, inspire them and help authentic voices come forward.

The evening was a strong moment of pride, reflection and hope for the Francophone community of Welland and beyond.
